Description: This workshop introduces a collaborative
approach to working with men and male youth in the context
of violence that features an invitation to alternative lifestyles.
It’s our experience that while confrontation may satisfy
a therapist’s or counsellor’s moral indignation,
it rarely promotes a productive working relationship with
clients. Instead, we work towards joining with men and male
youth in contextualizing violent lifestyles, creating a separation
between person and action. The separation of person from problem
opens space for consolidating actions and beliefs founded
on respect, responsibility and accountability.
This workshop for practitioners with some experience working
in the context of violence draws heavily from narrative therapy
practices, and particularly the work of Alan Jenkins. The
day will include a range of demonstrations, roleplays, discussion,
and practical handouts, and will address:
-
elements of culture and language which support violent
lifestyles
-
practical tools for counselling, including a clinical
map
-
invitation versus confrontation
-
how to co-construct respectful and accountable ways
of relating
-
guidelines for responsible practice
Our programs are adapted to match the clinical and educational
experience of participants. Please contact The Glebe Institute
if you have questions about the fit between your background
and specific programs.
