NARRATIVE PRACTICE GROUP II
Narrative Practice Group II is for health care professionals who have attended narrative practice group I, or who have some prior training in narrative therapy. Meetings will provide a comfortable and collaborative learning environment in which participants can maintain their connection with narrative values and practices, review case work through a narrative lens and build on their existing skills.
Over the course of 8 monthly meetings each participant will have an opportunity to be at the centre of an interview and reflecting team re-telling in the tradition of White's Definitional Ceremony structure (1997). This might involve:
being interviewed about a case that challenges them, (as themselves or 'in the role of' their client) and, through the reflecting team's responses, accessing new ways of thinking about their work;
practicing their interview skills and having these witnessed and validated by a reflecting team;
presenting a DVD recording or an account of a session and recruiting a reflecting team audience for their client's story.
Skills development options include:
viewing DVDs of narrative practitioners at work
application of scaffolding and mapping concepts to practice
practicing new skills, for example, re-membering conversations, or new ways of thinking about practice, for example, counselling people who have experienced trauma
exploring ways to adapt narrative practices to suit different work contexts, for example, group work or supervision.
The direction that the group takes will largely follow the preferences of its participants.
Readings and other homework tasks will be assigned to assist group members to stay connected to the ideas and practices between meetings. Commitment to regular attendance is strongly recommended.
Monthly meetings will be held at The Glebe Institute, 149 Second Avenue, Suite 201, Ottawa on the third Monday of every month from 6.30-8.30pm. Estimated starting date: November, to be confirmed once registration numbers are met (6-8 people maximum).
Cost for all eight sessions: $400, payable in advance. Application for CCA Continuing Education Credits is in process.
Facilitator: Christine Novy, MA, CCC, is a clinical and training associate of The Glebe Institute. Currently she collaborates with a variety of health care organizations within the Capital region to promote creative, narrative approaches to personal and community health.
